According to a press release, “Today’s Song” marks the 30th anniversary of Foo Fighters’ 1995 self-titled debut album, and is “the opening salvo of its next chapter.”
The tune begins with a melodic intro featuring frontman Dave Grohl singing over sparse instrumentation. The full band then kicks in, transforming the track into a dynamics-filled anthem, as Grohl’s vocals are accompanied by soaring guitar riffs and thunderous drumming.
As the press statement further notes, “Today’s Song” features “lyrical themes of personal evolution and perseverance in the face of life’s uncertainty and the passage of time.”
The single’s cover art features a painting of a white bird by Grohl’s 16-year-old daughter, Harper.
Foo Fighters teased the new song’s with a post on their social media pages featuring dark photos from the recording studio and an accompanying caption that reads, “2025 #FF30.”
The release of “Today’s Song” comes just a couple of days after Foo Fighters posted a cover of the 1981 Minor Threat tune “I Don’t Wanna Hear It.” According to YouTube, the track features Grohl’s new vocals added to music that was recorded back in 1995.
Grohl’s Message to Fans
In conjunction with the new track, Grohl has posted a lengthy message to fans at FooFighters.com in which he reflects on the group’s history and the musicians who have taken part in the band’s 30-year journey.
“Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak,” Dave’s message begins. “Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.”
Grohl goes on to address three former Foo Fighters members—Franz Stahl, who played guitar with the group from 1997 to 1999; and drummers William Goldsmith and Josh Freese, whose tenures with the band lasted, respectively, from 1995 to 1997 and 2023 to 2025.
“It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete,” Dave wrote, “so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.”
Dave concluded his message by paying homage to the band’s longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins, who played with the Foos from 1997 until his untimely death in 2023.
“And… Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever,” Grohl wrote. “The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”
